Justice for Children is an non-profit organization based in Houston, Texas that advocates for abused children.  Mostly what it does is provide free legal services to children who have been abused and to parents who are trying to protect their children and rescue them from abusive situations.

This article focuses on JFC’s chief legal counsel, Thomas Burton, and the founder of JFC, Randy Burton (no relation to each other).  Thoma graduated law school and was doing insurance law, but pretty quickly figured out that he didn’t want to spend his life doing that.  He also wanted a part time position so he could be home more with his kids.

Randy Burton is also a lawyer, and founded JFC in 1987 after prosecuting hundreds of family-based offenses.  He saw that these kids were not getting the help and representation that they needed.

JFC works with the courts, the social welfare system, and other agencies and concerned people to work the sytem to the benefit of the children.  Randy Burton says it’s really hard work, and not everyone could do it.  He says that Thomas Burton is uniquely qualified, because he has both the legal skill and the heart to deal with very difficult cases every single day.

It’s hard to keep balanced when you confront the pain of other people every day, especially when those people are kids.  You can get so overwhelmed you want to walk away just to protect yourself.  But the best among us find ways to deal with their own pain, so that they can help make things a little better for someone else.

Kudos to you, Thomas and Randy.  You make a difference.

Justice for Children (JFC) is a confused organization. You may not want to believe this but I should just direct you to an article that appeared in the Houston Chronicle, May 2, 2007. Do a search for Alene Ross Levy there and read it. Levy was about to go to work for them and made statements that were sexist and also rejecting of parental alienation.

I happen to be a direct victim of the so called advocacy of Justice for Children, as is my daughter of 23 years of age. My precious daughter was returned to her mother by Justice for Children and their henchmen from Fulbright and Jaworski, Llp. Her mother got free ‘help’ from JFC while she was out committing three major felonies. Mom parentally alienated our daughter to the point that even today she yet cannot even pick up a telephone to speak with me.

Just goes to show you what zealots are capable of doing, even those in the clothing of a barrister.

Thank you for giving us another side to the story. I’ll definitely look into that article you suggested. Thanks for posting.

Hi Kathy, thank you for your kind words. I am on the Board of Justice for Children and a proud and VERY strong advocate of Justice for Children. I have a degree in Child Psychology, and was a social worker for several years early in my career and saw the injustices that were done to children in the legal system simply because they or their parents did not understand what was happening. FOr over 22 years, Justice for Children has does what no other agency does, and they do a very good job of it. As with any cause that is making siginificant changes, what we do does not please everyone, especially those on the other side of the court room, but we are agressive and diligent in seeking out the truth in the cases and children we help, because they can not help themselves. II encourage anyone interested to go to our website http://www.justiceforchildren.org. Thank you again for posting, you may have saved a child’s life.

PS: I did not post my name because although he has every right to his opinion, I do not wish to interact with Mr. Gartner one on one. I hope you understand.

I do understand, and we do allow anonymity in our readers’ replies. Thank you for your input on this question. I think it’s important to hear different perspectves on things, but JFC, you have said one thing that I know is absolutely true… the courts cannot always be trusted to be advocates of children. Someone has to be on their side.

I hope our readers will read all the articles referenced and do their own research about this or any organization.

Thank you both for your thoughts and information.
