We all want to support our kids with their school activities but none of us want to be THAT parent…you know who I mean, the one who just goes overboard with everything. Here are some simple ways to show pride for your kids and their school without embarrassing your kids…too much.
- The simplest way to show spirit for your kids and the team is to show up at as many games as possible. Not just show up, but cheer and root for the team also. It is amazing how the simple act of going and watching a game, competition, play, etc., can boost a kid’s confidence.
- Buy a shirt. When the association that your child belongs to is selling shirts with a phrase, logo or just “GO TEAM” on it, buy it and wear it. If you can’t afford a school shirt, at least dress in school colors.
- Use window chalk or paint on your car in the school colors and write your child’s name, jersey number, school and/or sport on your car. If your child is driving, while they are at school or work, decorate their car. This doesn’t just apply to sports. If your kid is in the chess club and has a match coming up write something about that on your car, too. How often do you see community-wide support for the chess club?
- After the game, performance…whatever, compliment your child. Tell him what he did right or how well he performed. Find something to compliment, regardless of whether they are in the chorus or on the bench. Make sure that constructive critisism is given with respect and love. Tell them how they have improved since last time and if they are open to it, what could work for next. And offer to work with them–it won’t hurt you to toss a few balls or run a few line.
