It seems that there are more and more stories of frazzled moms trying desperately to keep their children calm being kicked off airlines almost daily. While this mom has a bit of a fear of flying, many others (far, far braver than I) are experiencing some surprising amount of backlash and hesitation of flying with their children.
From simple nervous glances, to rather dramatically being taken off a flight many moms are understandably concerned with flying with their children.
Human beings come ‘pre-programmed’ to have a certain reaction to a crying baby, and even if that same person has no children of their own- they can (and do, surprisingly often) have the general reaction of annoyance to the child. While this originally served as a way to make sure that that child was cared for (evolutionarily speaking) in modern times it has lead to some, at times, overly dramatic backlash. Rather unfortunately with a lot of public support,
There are some things you can do when flying with your child that can keep then calm and entertained.
- Bring toys, coloring supplies, and games.
- Nurse, Bring a pacifier, or (if it is age-appropriate) let them chew gum.
- If it is at all possible, bring them to the airport ahead of time. It will familiarize children with the area and make them more comfortable.
If you have any other tips for flying with a child- feel more than free to share in the comment section. It may save many other parents an unreasonably hard time after all.
