First airmail service by helicopter in Los Ang...

It seems that most people are really convinced that life was just easier when they were kids, from freedoms to fears.  To take action, there is a new parenting anti-trend in the works.

The whole point of it is to really be the anti-thesis to the helicopter parenting of the present and last generation.

When my own daughter was first born, it simply wasn’t possible for me to be more overprotective.  If someone so much as sneezed, I would force them to stay far, far away.  If it had been possible to put her in a bubble, oh you had better believed that she would have been in it.

As bad as that sounds, it was far worse.

However, there came a time that I was exhausting myself with worry.  Especially when you compared my prior ‘Devil May Care’ attitude towards most of everything, worrying simply isn’t good for me.  At first, I had to make a concerted effort to finally back off.

Eventually things got better, and to be honest- it’s the healthiest option to not have a nervous meltdown over every skinned knee, and childhood cold.

While that’s not to say to ignore instincts, it doesn’t do anyone any good to worry too much over every little thing.  If there is a cause for concern, by all means do what you have to.

Yet, giving your child some freedom (especially to fail) serves them far, far better through out their lives than never experiencing it.  You really

can’t protect them from everything, and  helping them learn through their mistakes are our jobs as parents after all.
