 Communication code scheme

Many of us enjoy the communication that comes along with social networking and blogging.  All these things are a great way to keep in touch with friends and family that it may be hard to otherwise connect with, but at what point is sharing too much?  Even dangerous?

Depending on your privacy levels online, the whole world could potentially find out those same little things you think are private.  While there is a good change that the stranger on the other end of the screen won’t care, there is also the chance that they could have bad intentions.

To protect yourself and your family online, it may do some good to follow a few basic steps:

  • If you are a blogger, don’t give too much information about yourself.  Even if you use a pseudonym, and you think only you and your cat may read your blog- it’s not too hard to still find out a lot of information by seemingly insignificant facts.
  • Don’t use your real information, while mentioning the pseudonym above- don’t use your real name on social websites either.  Even though many have an area to fill out phone numbers, your address, and a lot of other information- don’t fill it out.
  • Pay attention to your privacy settings.  Even if they are set-up keep in mind that many websites also give out the same information to those on your ‘friends’ list.  If you still want to add people that you may not know, keep any personal information slim.
  • Make sure your children aren’t over sharing online.  Talk to them about what they write, and if they are- explain to them the need to keep information private.

While the above are just a simple list, the tips can save your information private.  This can potentially save both you and your family a hard time in the future.
