It’s always distressing to hear your little one cough, especially in the middle of the night. Parents must know that coughing is the body’s way of clearing and protecting the airways from irritating mucus and other secretions. The following are facts that all moms should know:

Cough suppressants: if your child’s cough is keeping him up all night, a suppressant may help him sleep. Be sure to ask your pediatrician for recommendations. However, you should know that inhibiting a cough, especially if your child has mucousy , lower-respiratory ice, can actually prolong the illness.

Expectorants: They’re meant to loosen mucus, but studies shows that they’re not very helpful. Water is a good example of expectorant.

Cold relievers: These formulas contain more than one drug so be sure to read the labels carefully. Your child may suffer side effects such as sleeplessness or irritability.

Throat Lozenges: cough drops increase saliva production, which can soothe your child’s throat and loosen his cough. But don’t give them to children under 4 because like any hard candies, lozenges pose a choking hazard.

These are just some of the facts that all moms should consider. But it’s safer to visit your child’s doctor before giving medicines to your little one. Some kids are allergic to some cough syrup, so see to it that you buy what the doctor recommends.

Make sure that you use a measuring spoon, dropper, or cup to make sure you give your child the right does of medicine. Giving him more than the prescribed dose may cause side effects to your child.
