With a surprisingly large percentage of kids in Texas in home-school, it is leading the local government to wonder why exactly it is getting so popular. Many kids seem to be dropping out of school, and officials aren’t sure if the claim of switching to home-schooling is true.
While home-schooling’s popularity has increased, the rate of growth concentrated in Texas’ high school population is off the chart: It’s nearly tripled in the last decade, including a 24 percent jump in a single year.
“That’s just ridiculous,” said Brian D. Ray, founder of the National Home Education Research Institute. “It doesn’t sound very believable.”

The surge in home-schooled kids is surprising, and while it is a viable option for many, this increase is the most seen in a long time. The overall popularity of home-schooling kids has been growing elsewhere as well, in response to many things- from bulling to political differences with the public and private options.
In Texas however, the actual reasons for the surge of home-schooled kids isn’t known, primarily to the states shoddy record keeping practices. Officials are now looking into both improving the records and finding out the reasons behind the growth.
