Recent studies are showing that the way you parent may actually influence if your children will drink alcohol as a teenager. While it may seem as if it is another way to discourage parents, it shows some light into ways parents parents may be able to avoid their teens from drinking.
Below is the basic breakdown into the reasons, and parenting styles that have an effect on teens drinking:
- The teens least prone to heavy drinking had parents who scored high on both accountability and warmth.
- So-called "indulgent" parents, those low on accountability and high on warmth, nearly tripled the risk of their teen participating in heavy drinking.
- "Strict" parents—high on accountability and low on warmth—more than doubled their teen’s risk of heavy drinking.

While it may not pose much hope for those of a stricter parenting nature, there may be some more help for those who are worried.
Talking to your children early and often about the dangers associated with alcohol use may be able to prevent children from thinking about drinking in the future.
