During the fun and sun of the summer, many kids are outside much more than during the colder months. With so many activities, sports, and just fun to enjoy protecting them is even more important.
Making sure your kids stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. Try to avoid super-sugary drinks though, as they are both unhealthy and the sugar can pose issues for kids in the heat. For kids who aren’t too fond of water, and may refuse to drink it, you can add things like oranges and lemons (sliced up and with the seeds removed) to a tastier and nutritious treat.
Getting a waterproof (usually labeled a ‘Sports’ or ‘Active ‘ sun block) sun block (the recommended SPF is about 15-30) and making sure to reapply it every few hours is a huge step in protection. Just one sunburn can raise skin cancer risk by upwards of 75%, especially if there is a family history.
In addition to the normal protective measures, it may be a good idea to have kids sit and rest in the shade for a bit every few hours. Resting can give the body a break from the heat, and let it recuperate as well. Many kids haven’t really played heavily for a few months due to the colder seasons, so it may serve well to ease into playing rougher and longer.
