A recent study looking at television viewing habits of children are greatly changed by their parent’s rules. The rules that a parent sets for viewing times and rules have been shown in to stick around long into the adult years.
Setting up healthy viewing times does require a bit of planning and extra effort, but it seems to be able to stick. While banning all television may not work for everyone, and it’s not really expected to even be on the table for most families. However, you can limit the times that children watch television, and that one simple practice can have huge effects.
Talk to your family pediatrician, or do some simple research, to find out what the recommended viewing times are for your child’s age and whittle it down gradually until you reach a desired time. Usually about two hours is what most aim for, and it is worth the efforts.
Many studies conducted show that those children who do watch less television do play more outside and this of course is great exercise as well. Encouraging children to play as opposed to sit and surf channels may need a while to really catch on, but encourage them to play a sport or another favorite outdoor activity may help.
