While the internet has opened up a wide range of news and information to the world, it’s also taking the place of books. While many are finding comfort with an e-reader, sometimes they can’t really take the place of a normal paperback.

Unfortunately, more kids are reading online as well. Many may avoid books in favor of status updates or social networking. Getting them to pick up a book and walk away from the computer may seem difficult, but with just a few things you can improve you child’s reading and also improve their love of the written word.

  • Keep a range of book around.
  • Go to the library often.
  • Read to your child early and often.
  • Be animated when reading, you can use silly voices and talk ‘in character’ to help the books really come alive for your child.
  • Keep books everywhere. If your child is younger you can leave them anywhere that they will be able to reach on their own. Some great places? In the car, by their bed, and anywhere else that your child is often.
  • Help them make their own books. You can both make up the story and draw the pictures together.
  • Let younger children hold and touch the books. If you are worried about your own favorite tome getting ruined, you can find almost indestructible cloth books for children.
  • Rhyming prose is naturally interesting to younger children, and finding them good books that incorporate this can make a difference.

Finding time to read to your child is an important step in helping them to develop a lifelong love of the written word.
