Bumper pads, in recent years, have the reason for many SID or suffucation among babies. Babies, who still do not have the motor skills to turn or move their head away from bumper pads that are wrapped around their sleeping area, are prone to such dangers. The banning of this item has been necessary because of it.

According to a report from the Chicago Tribune, the ban will take effect in seven months time.

The city’s Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection will enforce the ordinance, responding to complaints and checking for products during inspections of stores. Retailers who violate the ordinance can face fines up to $500 for each violation.

Stores like Babies R Us have already expressed they will follow the local ordinance, even as the company sells bumper pads nationwide.

Meanwhile, baby bedding companies have already started redesigning bumper pads so that it becomes more compliant and save around babies. The addition of a mesh and zip features supposedly make this less dangerous. The local ruling in Chicago doesn’t say if these improved bumper pads are also included in the ban.

The trade group have been against the passing of the ordinance since the beginning claiming that there is no evidence linking SIDS to bumper pads. The Chicago Tribune, however, reports otherwise as there have been documented deaths were doctors have ruled that bumper pads is the cause.

According to the latest issue of Pediatrics Magazine, children are needlessly being exposed to a lot of risk of radiation and cancer when they undergo CT scan diagnosis. If the child has an injury to the head, it is most recommended not to undergo this, but rather parents and doctors must observe the child closely.

This, however, is difficult to insist with hospital personal staff. At Emergency Rooms in hospital, for example, a procedure or diagnosis using CT scan is already SOP. Many children who arrive at the ER for head injury and similar complaints are automatically taken for an exam.

Hospitals have been using this device since the 70′s and it’s difficult to convince them about the risk in children.

A CT scan can expose a child far more than what Xray’s can do. This increases the risk of developing cancers later on and can be detrimental to children who have to undergo a series of diagnosis. Radiation works to break down cells and frequent exposure can render the child’s body more vulnerable.

More information is revealed in this news article snippet from NPR:

Just 14 percent of the doctors in the study observed children’s symptoms first, Nigrovic found. And they didn’t miss injuries any more often than did the docs who scanned first.

“So there wasn’t a danger to those patients,” Nigrovic told Shots. “I hope that they’ll see that if they observe symptoms they can avoid a CT scan.”

She’s hoping both doctors and parents will be hip to the fact that CTs aren’t always required, particularly since they can’t diagnose concussion, a common head injury in children. “If you can explain that you will observe their child in the ER and try to avoid a potentially dangerous scan, they’re on board with that,” she says of the parents she sees in the ED.

And getting doctors to change their quick-to-scan ways? “It’s slowly chipping away over time,” Nigrovic says.

The “mommy makeover,” a trifecta of surgeries, is gaining popularity across the nation and here in Oklahoma.

A mommy makeover often consists of a breast augmentation or a breast lift, a tummy tuck and liposuction. Last year, doctors nationwide performed more than 325,000 mommy makeover procedures on women ages 20 to 39, up 11 percent from 2005, according to information from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Juan Brou, whose practice is based in Oklahoma City, said he has also seen a rise in mothers seeking these types of procedures.

Tummy tucks are another common procedure that can eliminate both stretch marks and a condition known as diastasis. Diastasis occurs when a woman’s abdominal muscles become separated, which sometimes happens in women who are carrying large babies. This condition leaves a woman with a lower tummy that cannot be exercised away.

Brou pointed out that it is important for women considering having their own mommy makeover to be sure they don’t intend to get pregnant again.

It’s very frustrating to get online and immediately be greeted by the news of a pandemic that’s going to get us all. Yes, this new strain of flu is something that needs to be taken seriously, but the media is senstationalizing things way too much. We’re not all on the verge of death, much less a worldwide plague that will wipe out life as we know it.

Remember, the more scared the media can make you, the more stories they can sell you. I’ve consulted with the CDC and with several local doctors and nurses. Here’s what you need to know.

This is not an epidemic or a pandemic. Only 40 cases have been confirmed in the US. That’s fewer than 1 in 7,000,000 people.

You can prevent this kind of flu the same way you prevent every other kind of flu: wash hands frequently, cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough, wipe and disinfect surfaces, stay home if you are sick and keep your kids home if they are, get a flu shot if you can, and drink plenty of liquids.

Stay healthy. Get rest, exercise, healthy food, and keep everyone hydrated.

Avoid large crowds as much as you can.

Don’t panic.

Flu of any type is more serious than we give it credit for, but this kind can be dealt with just like those other kinds that we do have experience with. I’ll keep checking in with my sources and letting you know if there’s new info, but in the meantime, practice good health and hygiene and go on with life. And dont’ worry so much.
