Adoption.com is probably the first site that comes up first when someone Googles “adoption.” I Googled “adoptive parents,” and it came up second under www.adoptiveparents.com, which seems to be a subpage of Adoption.com.
Perhaps it takes seriously the responsibility of being so highly ranked, because Adoption.com is one of the most thorough sites I have ever seen. It includes resources for birth parents seeking to choose adoptive parents for their baby, parents seeking to adopt, and adopted children themselves. It allows you to click links for profiles of children waiting to be adopted both in the US and overseas—and not just cute babies, either, but older children as well. It also provides current news stories having to do with adoption and parenting..
One of the most helpful features of Adoption.com is a section on the landing page dedicated to the viewer’s sate. I don’t know if my state came up because I have registered there in the past or if the computer fairies somehow know where I am, but it has links to waiting kids—including foster kids– adopting couples, adoption laws, potential expenses, and resources for searches and reunion in my state. There are also message boards where people from my state (or any state) can discuss adoption issues specific to that state.
In general, the message boards are another excellent feature of Adoption.com. When we were considering how and when to talk to our son about his adoption, I spent some time lurking over there, just listening to conversations. It was really helpful. There are also links to a dozen or so blogs that address adoption issues from all perspectives of the adoption triad.
Adoption.com is a good place to start if you’re looking for basic information, local information, or conversations with people like you. It can also point you in the direction of other resources that it links to.
