Summertime is one of the best seasons of the year, but it can also be one of the more dangerous ones as this is also the time in which disease-carrying mosquitoes rain down on our little ones in areas such as your backyard. So how do we ensure that these pesky insects won’t bite our little ones while playing outdoors?
If you want to protect your babies from harmful mosquitoes follow the tips below:
- Don’t wear bright or flower-themed clothing. I know it’s summer and it’s the hip thing to wear, but mosquitoes love to cling on colors that remind them of flowers or living flesh.
- Use shampoo or soap that doesn’t have a strong smell. Strong scents usually tips off the mosquitoes that something living is nearby.
- Play from 9AM to 4 PM only. Most female mosquitoes go on the hunt for blood from night to early morning so it’ll be safe to play in the daytime.
- Light up some citronella candles when the kids are outdoors.
- Slap on some insect repellent on their exposed skins. Use lotions with DEET ingredients only on children 3 months and above. Always remember that hands should not have any lotions on them as toddlers have a tendency to suck thumbs and fingers.
- Clear your backyard of standing water. Standing water is where most pregnant mosquitoes lay their eggs so taking out the trash and ensuring that there’s no areas for it to remain is an important fight in decreasing the mosquito population. One of the places you should definitely check out is the gutter.
Unlike unused tires and bottles, you can’t take out the gutter as it is an integral part of your house. So the best way to take out standing water from that area is to make sure they don’t get there in the first place. One of the best ways to do this is through gutter protection.
Gutter protection ensures that water flows freely by protecting the gutter from possible clogs such as dried up autumn leaves, ice from the snow, or even rodent or bird nesting. Installation is also a snap as you just have to get the right measurements for your gutter, put it in there, and then forget about it.
There are two types of gutter protectors: a gutter piler and a filter. The piler is a column shaped set of spikes that ensures no birds nor rodents even think of nest there. The filter on the other hand protects the gutter from falling seeds, leaves, and droppings from ever clogging up the gutter.
So buy the gutter protector that will solve your specific situation.
Remember an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, so be serious about gutter protection.
