Jewellery for kids are considered acceptable gifts, whether is precious jewellery or trendy accessories. These are great to give out during birthdays, graduations and Christmas. There are, however, a few considerations when planning on gifting jewellery to children.

One of it is to consider how age appropriate the jewellery is. For really younger kids who may still have the tendency to put everything in their mouths, charm bracelets, beaded accessories, or necklaces with lockets are instantly a no-no. There are, however, some baubles and bracelets that should look good and safe on toddlers and smaller children. Kids between the ages of 7-10 may enjoy something very colorful or have the trademark of their favorite characters. Older children may like something really trendy and hip, such as a fashionable childrens necklace made of cool materials, with fancy styles and bright, girly colors.

Take into account the materials used to create the jewellery. Some could be made of nickel and metal, as these are of low cost and, therefore, not much of a loss in case the kids become careless with it. But do consider if the material has lead in it, as this is potentially fatal to them. Kids may also have the tendency to get rashes and allergy from some accessories, so adults are supposed to take note of this. If there is a label, check for content first before buying. Or better yet ask the store about where the piece was made and what materials were used.

If you are giving children fine jewellery, teach them to be responsible for it and also advise them on how to take good care of something precious. Fine jewellery, in fact, must only be worn during special occasions, so do let the child know that this is the deal.

Gifting jewellery and accessories actually teaches these young girls to take care of their personal items better. It’s good training and at the same time a wonderful gift…because what girl doesn’t love jewellery?

ToddlerDance.jpg tot dancing w/statue image by rickosports

Does your toddler love to twist and shout whenever he hears music playing? Be glad! it’s a step in the right direction. Your little one may seem to have only recently caught the dancing bug, but in fact he’s been perfecting those moves for well over a year. Even when you held up your 6-month-old so he could stand stand on your lap, he was probably practicing some rhythmic knee bends. And After a few months after your child took his first unassisted steps, he most likely began to saunter or sway his body from side to side whenever he heard music playing.

The rocking and reeling is an obvious sign of your toddler improving physical activities but don’t overlook all the incredible mental work that also goes into gettin’ joggy with it. When your child dances, messages are quickly sent ot the brains about the body’s orientation inspace. The brain then tells the body exactly how to respond, in which direction your  child’s eyes ought to be pointed, how she should use her arms and brace her legs in order to maintain her sense of balance, and so forth.

You can incorporate dancing into your child’s playtime. Make space so your child can move about freely and safely. Don’t be shy, join in on the fun, even if you have two left feet. Don’t be afraid to get up close and personal. Let your child dance on your feet, and bop around together. Remember that kids love when their parents act silly. It can be a big relief not to feel like someone is always in charge. Happy dancing this Christmas season!

Clark the Baby SharkParents are disillusioned with electronic products that claim to benefit their baby’s development. Disney’s announcement last week offering refunds to all purchasers of Baby Einstein videos that falsely claimed to be educational highlights this frustration.

In their search for proven ways to help their babies build vocabulary and cognitive skills, parents have discovered Clark the Baby Shark, a series of reading toys built on dialogic reading systems recommended by early literacy experts.

The first production build of Clark Sets sold out within three weeks. Now that Clark is one year old, the company sees steady growth. The set of three reading toys is $29.95 and comes with The Parent’s Guide to Reading With Babies and Toddlers.

Don’t you ever wish that you have enough space inside your toddler’s room, where you can have fun and just relax with them? I know what your thinking, “oh, it’s not possible”, “we’ll just use a different room”or maybe.. “we’d rather go to the mall” Let me stop you there. Do you know that you add confidence to your child’s life if you give time hanging around his room? Yes! You’ve read it right. If you think that your stepping on with their privacy, (we’re not talking about your highschool son or college daughter. We’re talking about your toddlers or your  preschool kids.) well you’re not. Your child needs to see that you’re part of their own world. Visiting their room is part of it. You give them confidence when you tell them that they did a good job in fixing their room, or two thumbs up for packing away their toys, or maybe by just allowing them to tour you in their imaginary museum. Kids are kids, let’s not pressure them to act like adults, let them have fun and enjoy every minute of their childhood.

price: $210

yhst-17116217969881_2070_270169647Summertime is one of the best seasons of the year, but it can also be one of the more dangerous ones as this is also the time in which disease-carrying mosquitoes rain down on our little ones in areas such as your backyard. So how do we ensure that these pesky insects won’t bite our little ones while playing outdoors?

If you want to protect your babies from harmful mosquitoes follow the tips below:

  • Don’t wear bright or flower-themed clothing. I know it’s summer and it’s the hip thing to wear, but mosquitoes love to cling on colors that remind them of flowers or living flesh.
  • Use shampoo or soap that doesn’t have a strong smell. Strong scents usually tips off the mosquitoes that something living is nearby.
  • Play from 9AM to 4 PM only. Most female mosquitoes go on the hunt for blood from night to early morning so it’ll be safe to play in the daytime.
  • Light up some citronella candles when the kids are outdoors.
  • Slap on some insect repellent on their exposed skins. Use lotions with DEET ingredients only on children 3 months and above. Always remember that hands should not have any lotions on them as toddlers have a tendency to suck thumbs and fingers.
  • Clear your backyard of standing water. Standing water is where most pregnant mosquitoes lay their eggs so taking out the trash and ensuring that there’s no areas for it to remain is an important fight in decreasing the mosquito population. One of the places you should definitely check out is the gutter.

Unlike unused tires and bottles, you can’t take out the gutter as it is an integral part of your house. So the best way to take out standing water from that area is to make sure they don’t get there in the first place. One of the best ways to do this is through gutter protection.

Gutter protection ensures that water flows freely by protecting the gutter from possible clogs such as dried up autumn leaves, ice from the snow, or even rodent or bird nesting. Installation is also a snap as you just have to get the right measurements for your gutter, put it in there, and then forget about it.

There are two types of gutter protectors: a gutter piler and a filter. The piler is a column shaped set of spikes that ensures no birds nor rodents even think of nest there. The filter on the other hand protects the gutter from falling seeds, leaves, and droppings from ever clogging up the gutter.

So buy the gutter protector that will solve your specific situation.

Remember an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, so be serious about gutter protection.

The parenting column in the New York Times today discusses the problem of kids and stealing.  Is it a normal phase kids go through, o r does it presage issues of character or behavior that parents need to worry about?  I remember being about 5 years old and seeing a candy bar that had fallen underneath the display case in the grocery store.  I somehow got it into my head that those fallen candy bars were free, so I took it.  Of course, a few minutes later, when my mom found out, I was marched back into the store, and made to tell the manager what I had done and to give the candy bar back.  The thing was, I didn’t think I was stealing, I just thought those were free candy bars.

Apparently that sort of thing is pretty normal, according to pediatrician Perri Klass’s article.  Different things are going on with kids at different ages, though.  For a toddler, boundaries have to come from the outside, because they aren’t able to set them on the inside.  A toddler’s entire thought process is “I see it, I want it, I take it, it’s mine.”  Toddlers have to be taught–patiently and consistently–that not everything they see or want is theirs.

Klass then goes on to talk about kids who are a little older–old enough to know that what they’re doing is wrong and to try to cover it up by lying or hiding.  These kids are testing, she says.  They want to be caught.  They need to be caught.  She quotes Dr. Barbara  Howard of Johns Hopkins, who says, “Kids are trying to find out what happens if you get caught, and one of the biggest problems is if you don’t catch them. They’re trying to find out what the rules are, and if nobody catches them and says, ‘That’s wrong, you have to give that back or pay for it,’ they don’t get a sense of being properly supervised.”

So if stealing is a fairly normal developmental phase, are there times when parents should be concerned about stealing?  Yes.  When a child is stealing as a means of acting out, he may need help dealing with the underlying issue.  Stealing something of a sibling’s or classmate’s could indicate self-esteem problems or underlying resentments that must be addressed.  In those cases, stealing is only a symptom.

For the most part, stealing needs to be dealt with gently but firmly, with boundaries set and reiterated and consequences immediate and consistent.  But pay close attention; if your child needs extra help dealing with some kind of emotional problem, it’s your job to notice that, too.
