Do you have kids as young as 11 or 12 years old already interested in the Twilight series? The books’ popularity among young kids has gone on overdrive, particularly because of the movie franchise tied to it. With constant images of its stars seen on TV, its easy for its target market to be easily swayed into the phenomenon.
If you are not familiar with the books, you have to know that this series is a bit on the dark fantasy side. Some parents may find this too mature for their tweeners but with proper guidance, you can help your kids appreciate and love stories like this.
First of all, the series is written by Stephanie Meyers who was pushed to write the story based on the dream she had. She says on her website —
“In my dream, two people were having an intense conversation in a meadow in the woods. One of these people was just your average girl. The other person was fantastically beautiful, sparkly, and a vampire. They were discussing the difficulties inherent in the facts that A) they were falling in love with each other while B) the vampire was particularly attracted to the scent of her blood, and was having a difficult time restraining himself from killing her immediately.”
While the author is aware of the criticisms against her book as being sexually explicit, she does agree that it’s not meant to be read by 9 to 12 year olds, as she had written these for teenagers.
The series has 4 books: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse & Breaking Dawn, with the last two books deemed as mature for tweens. It is really up to you parents to monitor your kids’ when reading her series.
